WATER USE INSPECTION DEPARTMENT (WUID)

ANA's Water Use Inspection Department is responsible for the enforcement of the National Water Policy's command and control instruments. For that purpose, the WUID carries out inspection and monitoring activities aiming at ensuring the multiple uses of water resources as defined by law.

The WUID's activities have both a preventive and a control character, as it ensures that citizens follow legal procedures on the one hand and, on the other hand, it informs users on the legal precepts and procedures so as to legalize their water resources use. This legalization takes place through the enrollment of the actual water user who declares his or hers current water use and applies for a water permit.

Preventive inspection aims at the enforcement of the River Basin Water Resources Plan and in the enforcement of the River Basin Committee decisions. It aims at directing the water user towards enrollment and regularization through water permits. Preventive activities entails regular inspection campaigns on selected river basins. Control activities on the other hand usually responds to specific charges or accusations made to the Agency, as well as to regular field inspection visits made by the WUID, aiming at .steering water users on legal procedures and at mediating water conflicts whenever required through building consensus or, through the enforcement of existing legal instruments.
