INSTITUTIONAL COORDINATION DEPARTMENT (ICD)

The Institutional Coordination Department's activities aim at putting in place the National System for Water Management by supporting the creation of River Basin Committees, by giving technical support to State Governments on the implementation of water management systems and tools and through the implementation of programs that promote the establishment of the National System for Water Management (SNGRH).

The National Council for Water Resources (CNRH) was created by Law 9433/97, with the mandate to promote the coordination of the water policy by the different partners of the National System for Water Management (SNGRH). These partners are government organizations at different levels of scale: national, regional, state and local levels; private sector representatives and civil society representatives.

The National Water Agency is a member of the SNGRH, and has the mandate to coordinate and implement the National Water Policy. It is ANA's responsibility to supervise, control, assess and evaluate actions for the enforcement of the water resources legal framework. These responsibilities are carried out mainly through the ICD.

MAIN PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS

The River Basin Pollution Abatement Program - PRODES - was created in march 2001 aiming at providing incentives to the implementation of Sewerage Treatment Plants which, in turn, would both prevent river basin pollution as well as reduce the existing water pollution levels in the river basins in Brazil.
